a lot of VPN providers have a “free” version of their service alongside their paid plans, so what’s the real reason behind this? Are we really anonymous while using them?

Many VPN providers offer free versions to attract users and then upsell paid plans. Free VPNs often have limitations like slower speeds, data caps, or fewer servers. Also, some free VPNs may log your data or show ads, so you are not always fully anonymous. For better privacy and security, a reputable paid VPN is usually recommended.

“free VPN” always feels like one of those too good to be true deals. Servers cost money, so if you’re not paying cash, they’re probably making money off you in other ways, like ads, throttled speeds, or straightup selling your data.
Also, VPN ≠ total anonymity. You’re just moving trust from your ISP to the VPN company, and if it’s a sketchy free one, that’s not really an upgrade. I only use free VPNs for quick stuff like unblocking a video, but if I actually care about privacy, I stick to a paid one with a no-logs policy.
